One of the questions I get the most is “why do you work out so much?” And in return I always want to ask that person… “why do you not workout at all?”
I workout because it makes me feel good. It is a vital necessity in my everyday schedule that helps me survive a bit. I get a satisfaction when I know I am pushing my body to its limit. I also have a paranoia of weight gain. I had a friend once (not mentioning names) who was probably one of the tiniest people I have ever known. And overnight, I watched her weight fluctuate till she was almost 300 something pounds. My mother is diabetic and my father has high cholesterol. With a past history like that, I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be working out to save my health and myself.
“If it’s important to you, you will find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.”
And everytime I hop into a conversation with a friend, the first thing they always tell me is that they never have any time or that they just aren’t motivated enough. They have tried every gym and every class and just can’t seem to pull thru. And my one response is …
If you care about your health, your life, maybe your kids, maybe you want to live a bit longer, maybe you have something to live for, maybe you want to be happy, maybe you want a challenge, maybe you want to try something new, maybe you haven’t discovered your niche and want to, maybe you want to prevent health illnesses, maybe you want to feel healthy … whatever your reason may be …you will always find time in your hectic busy schedule to make time for that reason. I exercise for my health and therefore I make time for my health because it’s that important to me.
And people always find excuses not to make it to the gym because they haven’t found a gym routine that works for them. Maybe you don’t want to be at the gym and working outdoors is fine. Maybe you like to take classes or go for walks. Maybe you like to run outdoors or take zumba classes. Maybe you just like to play basketball instead of lifting weights at the gym. In order for you to find time and no excuses at the gym, you have to find something you love. And there is something out there for everyone. Just keep looking around and trying new things. When you do, you will love your workout and maybe even become addicted to it.
My other recommendation is always do something for your workout that will increase your intensity and keep you focused. For me its music. I love music and I truly think a good playlist is what makes a good workout. I listen to a lot of house music when I work out because I find that it keeps my energy high and my pace high. I’ve listed my top 5 songs below for anyone who is interested!
1. Aviici: Fade into Darkness
2. Jennifer Lopez ft Pitbull: Dance Again
3. Dj Pauly D- Night of My Life
4. Britney Spears: Stronger
5. David Guetta ft Nicki Minaj: Turn me On
These are in no particular order, but a sample of my shuffle ipod.
My challenge for you this week is to not make excuses, find something you love, explore a little, make a routine, maybe see if you can stick to it, and cater the workout to you. Never allow yourself to cater to it because pretty soon you’ll lose interest. Perhaps through this challenge, you will learn something new about yourself that you never knew. Good luck!
